ForSight Robotics' road to performing a fully robotic cataract surgery

ForSight Robotics has achieved a milestone in ophthalmic surgery with its JASPER Platform, which recently completed the first fully robot-assisted cataract surgery in a human patient. This advancement addresses the global shortage of trained cataract surgeons and aims to make the procedure more accessible through robotics and AI.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and surgery is the only treatment. However, a shortage of trained surgeons limits access. ForSight Robotics’ JASPER Platform (formerly ORYOM) assists surgeons with every step of cataract surgery, providing advanced imaging, precision, and motion scaling to reduce fatigue and variability.

In April, JASPER performed a complete robot-assisted cataract surgery from first incision to closure, performed by Dr. Alexey Rapoport with Dr. Robert Edward T. Ang of the Asian Eye Institute as principal investigator. This contrasts with previous ophthalmic robotic procedures that only handled partial tasks. Dr. Joseph Nathan, co-founder and chief medical officer, called it a transformative event that could enable consistent surgery and accommodate more surgeons.

ForSight Robotics plans to continue developing JASPER to address the surgeon shortage and improve surgical consistency, though specific next steps and timelines were not detailed in the source.
