Avatar Robotics raises seed round to address industrial labor constraints

Avatar Robotics has raised $6.5 million in a seed financing round to support the deployment of its semi-humanoid robots across logistics, manufacturing, and warehousing operations. The investment, led by AlleyCorp, follows a pre-seed round led by defy.vc and includes participation from Headline, Henry Ford III, Refashiond, Paul Vogel, Jack Huffard, and Samuel Udotong.

Founded in 2024 by Colin Webb and Nenye Anagbogu, both MIT graduates, the San Francisco-based startup plans to allocate the capital toward scaling robot fleets, expanding customer deployments, advancing its autonomy software, and growing its engineering and operations teams. CEO Webb’s background includes engineering autonomous systems for self-driving cars and AI-powered drones, as well as co-founding an AI startup with Anagbogu.

Avatar Robotics employs a human-in-the-loop operational model that combines humanoid hardware, remote teleoperation, and machine-learning autonomy. This approach uses remote human operators to bridge the gap today while improving autonomy with every task completed. Amy Yin, a partner at defy.vc, said, “Colin’s vision for Avatar instantly captivated me. The path to full robotic autonomy will require both better hardware and massive amounts of real-world data. The technical team includes engineers and operational personnel with prior experience at institutions and companies such as Cruise, Apple, Tesla, Intuitive Surgical, Unity, and MIT. The funding is intended to address industrial labor constraints by deploying robots in sectors facing workforce shortages.
