China: ENGINEAI’s 129,000 sq ft factory claims to build one humanoid robot every 15 mins

LEAD: Chinese humanoid robotics startup ENGINEAI has inaugurated a 129,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Shanghai, claiming a production cadence of one humanoid robot every 15 minutes. If realized, this rate would represent a step-change in humanoid manufacturing throughput, potentially enabling mass deployment of general-purpose humanoid platforms for industrial and commercial applications.

BACKGROUND: ENGINEAI, founded in 2023, is one of several Chinese startups racing to commercialize humanoid robots, competing with firms like Fourier Intelligence, Xiaomi, and UBTech. The company’s flagship robot, the SE01, is a full-size humanoid designed for industrial tasks such as material handling and assembly. While ENGINEAI has not disclosed specific production volumes, the new factory is intended to scale up output to meet growing demand from manufacturing and logistics sectors. The 129,000 sq ft facility is dedicated to assembly, testing, and quality assurance, with automation integrated into the production line.

KEY DETAILS: The SE01 humanoid stands 1.7 meters tall and weighs 65 kg, with a payload capacity of 15 kg per arm. It features 40 degrees of freedom (DoF), including 6 DoF per leg and 7 DoF per arm, enabling bipedal locomotion and dexterous manipulation. The robot uses a combination of harmonic drives and brushless DC motors for joint actuation, prioritizing precision and energy efficiency. ENGINEAI claims a walking speed of 3.5 km/h and the ability to climb stairs and traverse uneven terrain. The robot is powered by a 2.3 kWh battery pack, providing approximately 2 hours of continuous operation. The factory employs a modular assembly approach, with parallel workstations for sub-assembly of legs, arms, torso, and head, followed by final integration and a 30-minute functional test cycle. ENGINEAI states that the 15-minute cycle time is achievable through optimized line balancing and automated screw-driving and wiring harness installation.

OUTLOOK: ENGINEAI’s claimed production rate, if sustained, could position the company as a leading volume manufacturer of humanoid robots, potentially undercutting competitors on cost and delivery time. The factory’s output is expected to serve early adopters in automotive and electronics assembly, where repetitive material handling tasks are prevalent. However, the 15-minute cycle claim requires independent verification, and the company must demonstrate consistent quality and reliability at scale. If successful, ENGINEAI could accelerate the timeline for widespread humanoid robot adoption in manufacturing, pushing other developers to ramp up their own production capabilities.
